Drywall that has been wet rarely goes back to being structurally sound drywall, no matter how well it dries.
A stain on a ceiling or wall gets a lot of homeowners reaching for a can of stain-blocking primer, and that fixes the appearance for a while without touching the actual problem underneath.
Drywall is compressed gypsum with a paper facing bonded to both sides. Once genuinely saturated, the paper's bond to the gypsum core weakens, and the core itself can lose cohesion where it stayed wet long enough. It can look dry again days later and still not be structurally the same board it was before, which is why cut-out-and-replace is the standard response rather than dry-and-repaint.
Replacing the board without finding where the water came from just resets the clock. A roof leak, failed flashing, a slow supply line leak inside a wall cavity, or condensation from poor attic or wall insulation can all produce a similar-looking stain, and the repair is only as good as identifying which one it actually was.
Water travels along the path of least resistance inside a wall or ceiling cavity, which means visible staining is not always a reliable map of how far the damage actually extends. A careful cutout checks past the visible stain rather than stopping exactly at its edge.
Framing and insulation behind the drywall need to be confirmed dry before new board goes in. Closing a wall back up over damp framing invites the same problem, or a mold problem, regardless of how good the new drywall looks.
If the source turns out to be roofing, active plumbing, or an HVAC and insulation issue, that work needs to happen first and by the right trade. Drywall replacement is the last step, not the first one, in a water damage repair.
